Intel today officially announced the 5th Generation Intel Core i3, i5, and i7 processors for laptops and other mobile PC form factors such as 2-in-1 systems.
The 5th Gen Core series CPUs, known as Broadwell, started shipping last year in form of the Intel Core M 5Y70 with a lower-mid-range performance, very low power consumption, and potentially fanless cooling. You can find this brand new processor breed in a few ultra-thin convertible laptops such as the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro.
The most widely adopted notebook processors currently are those from the 4th Generation Haswell Intel Core U-series family, such as the i3-4030U, i5-4210U and i7-4510U. They are utilized in numerous thin-and-light and mainstream systems, delivering a mid-range computing speed without consuming excessive amounts of power. 15 Watts, precisely. Their 15-Watt 5th Gen replacements arrived today in 10 different variants. In particular, the i3-5005U, i3-5010U, i5-5200U, i5-5300U, i7-5500U, and i7-5600U, all with the Intel HD 5500 integrated graphics replacing the HD 4400, plus the i5-5250U, i5-5350U, i7-5550U, and i7-5650U with slightly faster Intel HD 6000 as the biggest difference. Furthermore, the new Core lineup features the i3-5157U, i5-5257U, i5-5287U, and i7-5557U with the Intel Iris 6100 IGP. It is supposed to be noticeably better in terms of graphics performance than the HD 5500 and 6000, but still without being a gaming-class GPU solution. The processors with Iris consume 28W of power.
Furthermore, the Core-series Broadwell parts are accompanied by a couple of budget-class Pentium and Celeron chips based on the same architecture.
For affordable tablets, Intel has prepared a new platform with low-power Atom Cherry Trail system-on-chip, replacing the Bay Trail.

Intel Broadwell brings several improvements over the current Haswell generation. The most remarkable one is a die shrink to 14 nanometers from 22nm. This enables physically smaller CPUs, better power efficiency, and cooler operation. Another important improvement is in the integrated graphics department, with expected somewhat smoother gaming than on the corresponding Haswell Intel Core chips. The 14nm Cherry Trail SoC brings the same kind of improvements when compared to the Bay Trail.
The announced processors will be available starting this month.
